Simple one-column CV template
The Essential template puts everything in a single column, top to bottom, with clear headings and one accent colour. It is the most understated of our templates and also the easiest to read for the applicant tracking systems (ATS) many employers use to receive applications.
Free, no sign-up, no watermark. Download as PDF and Word.
Perfect for
- Applications through job portals and company websites.
- Technical fields: IT, engineering, finance, logistics.
- Candidates with a lot of experience who want to give it room.
How to make the most of it
Reuse the wording of the job advert where it genuinely matches your experience: tracking systems compare your CV with the advert. Three or four bullet points per role are enough, with results and tools.
CV Espresso’s PDF has selectable text, which is what this software needs. If the portal asks for a Word file, download the Word version: it has the same structure and you can edit it.
Frequently asked questions
What is an ATS?
It is the software many employers use to receive and filter applications: it reads your CV, extracts the details and compares them with the job advert. A simple one-column CV is the one it reads best.
Can I add a photo?
Yes. For applications in the UK, Ireland or the United States, though, it is better to leave it out: in the «Design» tab choose «None».
