What to write in a sales assistant CV
The profile
Two or three sentences on where you have sold, what, and with what results. It is the first thing a store manager reads.
GenericBubbly, outgoing person with excellent people skills and a passion for fashion.
SpecificFive years in retail, in fashion chains and boutiques. In 2025 I beat my sales target in ten months out of twelve.
Experience
For each shop give the brand or name, the town, the department and the dates. Then the facts: takings or number of transactions, targets met, extra responsibilities such as opening, closing or stock counts. Seasonal work in the sales or at Christmas counts too: it shows you can handle the busiest days.
Skills to include
- Customer advice and add-on selling.
- Till, payments, returns and exchanges, end-of-day cash-up.
- Window displays and visual merchandising.
- Receiving deliveries, stockroom and stock counts.
- Languages, if the shop serves tourists.
Availability
Many ads ask for weekend and bank holiday shifts, or part-time hours at certain times. Put your availability in one line: it saves the recruiter a question.
Applying to large chains
Big retailers often receive applications through a portal that reads CVs automatically. In that case use the Essential one-column template and use the job title exactly as written in the ad.
Frequently asked questions
“Sales assistant”, “retail assistant” or “shop assistant”?
Use the title in the job ad. When the title on your CV matches, both the reader and the software that filters CVs recognise you at once.
Should I add a photo?
It depends on the country: common in Italy and much of continental Europe for customer-facing jobs, best left out in the UK, Ireland and the US.
